Recent Developments of DVB-RCS in South Korea

15_flyearth.jpe28 April 2005: PentaMedia Co. Ltd is in the final stages of developing a “mobile” solution within DVB-RCS for deployment in the maritime environment. The company have also installed a major DVB-RCS broadband system for the Military National Defence of South Korea.

Mobile Maritime Solution
From July 2005, a new mobile DVB-RCS solution for maritime use is scheduled to be commercially available, bringing a new and greater choice for high-speed satellite communication services to ships.

The mobile DVB-RCS solution is expected to provide a cost effective revolutionary solution to ship owners and operators, providing benefits such as broadband Internet and access to corporate intranets.

Until now, high costs have made many shipping operators reluctant to increase non-essential global maritime communications. By making all broadband services available at much lower costs, shipping operators are expected to welcome this opportunity.

South Korean Military Solution
PentaMedia have installed a major DVB-RCS system for the Military National Defence of South Korea, delivering broadband channels of 2 Msps to a large number of military bases in remote locations where there is little or no terrestrial access to telecommunication facilities.

The main use of the system is to provide VoiP (IP encapsulated TV entertainment), gaming and training videos to soldiers and families located in military bases. This is a new concept for Military Welfare, which will help to enhance the quality of life and reinforce the spiritual morale of the soldiers.

Further use of the system is envisaged to include cyber marketing, legal consultation, cyber cafes, natural disaster monitoring and the linking of civilian and government offices.
